2006 Lecturer | Dr. Edward G. Gregorich

About the Lecturer

As a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Research Branch in Ottawa, Canada, since 1989, Dr. Gregorich has focused his work on soil biochemistry, particularly carbon and nitrogen cycling in soil.

Dr. Gregorich has served as President of the Canadian Society of Soil Science and is currently Chair of the Soil Biology and Biochemistry Division of the Soil Science Society of America. He has been an associate editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science, Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment, and Journal of Environmental Quality.

He has edited three books and written more than 80 papers in refereed journals and 21 book chapters. Dr. Gregorich served as a member of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and as Lead Author for the North American chapter in the Third Assessment Report, 2001. He is an adjunct professor at Queen’s and McGill universities and has enjoyed co-supervising the research of many grad students.

Ed is married to Joan Gregorich, a science writer and teacher, and has three sons with a keen interest in rugby, hockey and football. He travels widely, enjoys woodworking and photography, and volunteers with an inner-city ministry in downtown Ottawa.

Research

Dr. Gregorich’s research interests center on the interactions between soil and the environment. A common theme of his work is the effects of human activities and climate change on soil biochemical processes, focussing on the regulation of fluxes of biogenic gases, nutrients and elements between the soil and the atmosphere, the biosphere and aquatic systems. He has conducted field studies in various parts of Canada, as well as Scotland, New Zealand and Antarctica.

Education

He attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he obtained a B.Sc. in 1982 and M.Sc. in 1984, and received a Ph.D. in soil science from the University of Guelph in 1989.
